Tanya Pyankova: The Age of the Red Ants

Book reading and public discussion of the book “The Age of Red Ants” on the memory and the consequences of Holodomor by Tanya Pyankova, Vasyl Kuzan, Dr. Lidia Zessin-Jurek.

On February 21st 2023, Citizen+ organised a public event and book reading of Ukrainian writer Tanya Pyankova, the author of the novel ‘The Age of the Red Ants’, dedicated to the memory of Holodomor survivors and based on research in historical archives. The book reading event was organised with the support of Deutsche Gesellschaft für Osteuropakunde e.V. (Junge DGO) and our partner NEED – science and education platform and took place at PANDA Kulturplattform space in Berlin.

Ukrainian author Tanya Pyankova visited Berlin in person and, together with Ukrainian poet, journalist, and activist Vasyl Kuzan, discussed the memory of Holodomor and its influence on civic society in Ukraine, its remembrance in the times of the Russian full-scale invasion of Ukraine and underlined the importance of recognizing Holodomor as an act of genocide. Dr. Lidia Zessin-Jurek, a historian and memory researcher, moderated the public event, which was translated into English and Ukrainian by Iryna Kovalenko, European University Viadrina.
